No just estimate of the character of Lord Chesterfield can be formed without some knowledge of the times in which he lived and of the set in which he moved. Nor can we pass correct judgment on the letters to his son and to his godson without taking into account the social and moral conditions the state of civilization generally of the England and the Europe which were the scene of their career, and the characters and circumstances of those to whom they were addressed. The period of persecution for religious beliefs had passed away in England, and, with safety and toleration, religion had fallen asleep. People had ceased to think so much about it, and it had become a respectable and commonplace affair, in which no one was much interested, and with which very few but the middle classes concerned themselves. The higher ranks, from the King downwards, were very immoral; they drank enormously, and as a rule no gentleman was ashamed of being seen intoxicated; they also swore frightfully.
