Im vergangenen Jahre wurde ich von dem ‚freien Deut-n sehen Hochstift in Frankfurt a. M. Aufgefordert, einen Lehrgang über Kaiser Constantin und die christliche Kirche zu halten. Da ich in wissenschaftlichen Aufsätzen und in Vorlesungen an der hiesigen Universität den Stoff wiederholt behandelt hatte, war mir der Zwang er wünscht, die Auffassung die sich mir allmählich ge' bildet hatte, in der knappen Form, zu der solche Vorträge zwingen, darzustellen: das ist immer das beste Mittel, sich selbst über die Probleme klar zu werden. Tatsächlich glaubte ich wahrzunehmen daß die Abfassung der Vor träge mehr Klarheit und Zusammenhang in meine Vor stellungen und Anschauungen brachte; daraus habe ich den Mut geschöpft, die Geschichtsdarstellung, die ar sprünglich für den mündlichen Vortrag ausgearbeitet war, nach einer sorgfältigen Revision der Öffentlichkeit zu übergeben.
