Excerpt from The Case Against the Burials Bill: Being a Paper Read Before the Rural Decanal Chapter of Bolton-Le-Moors, Lancashire, and Published at Their Request
His position as parish priest is privileged, and excludes their own ministers. Mr. Morgan's Burials Bill is a Dissen ting Ministers' Bill its real source is Dissenting pride and ambition and its great object is to impair the influence and prestige of the clergy, by artificially forcing up the social status and pretensions of those, who have taken upon themselves to be ministers of Christ without having received that ordination which Christ appointed. The secret fount and origin of this Burials Bill is envy of, and ill will to, the Church of England and her clergy. Yet it is rather odd to hear an earnest Dissenter like Mr. Richards objecting to the clergy man's declaring, when he buries a Dissenter, that the deceased had and has a sure and certain hope of a resurrection to eternal life.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book examines the political and religious controversies surrounding burials in England during the 19th century, focusing on the Burials Bill proposed by the Right Honorable W.E. Forster in 1876. The author argues that the bill was the culmination of a long-running dispute between the Church of England and various Nonconformist groups over the question of who had the right to be buried in Church of England graveyards and with what form of religious service. The author traces the history of this dispute from its origins in the 17th century to its climax in the late 19th century, showing how it intersected with broader debates about religious toleration, the role of the established church, and the relationship between church and state in England. The author concludes that the Burials Bill was ultimately a victory for the Nonconformists and a significant step towards the disestablishment of the Church of England.
