Mit Zagen übergehc ich diese Studie der Oeflentlichkeit; denn wie ernst der Mensch auch wollen und schauen mag die Schöpfungen der Menschen werden immer ein Stückwerk sein. Eins allein gibt mir Muth: In der Literatur bekannte und ge nannte Männer sprachen schon 1861 über meine Preisschrift ein rühmendes Urtheil; sie und andere sind mir seitdem wohlwollend beigestanden. Herzlichen Dank dafür! Möchten sie mir auch ferner beistehen wenn das eine und andere Urtheil zu hart aus fallen sollte!

Es fallt mir nicht ein, Kant's hohe Verdienste um die Philo sophie zu beanstanden; aber auf Kant weist nicht bloss unsere gesammte jetzige Philosophie zurück, in Kant eulminirt zu gleicher Zeit die vorangegangene Philosophie des „cogito ergo sum, die im Grossen und Ganzen sehr einseitig verlaufen war. „die Auf klärung, sagt Hegel in seiner Kritik Jacobi's, hatte die Traditio nen ehrwürdiger Lehre und Sitte, den empfangenen und unmittel bar gegebenen Inhalt einer göttlichen Welt nach allen Seiten aufgelöst, und dieses sogenannte Positive, weil und insofern das Selbstbewusstsein sich in ihm nicht, oder, was dasselbe ist, weil es sich nicht im Selbstbewusstsein fand, aufgegeben und verwor fen. Was übrig blieb, war der Todtenkopf eines abstrakten leeren Wesens. Diese Aufklärung bekämpfte Jacobi und was hievon in Kant eulminirte und in der kritischen phiiosophie sich erhielt, und es mussten sich diese Lehrsätze selbst nach dem Ausspruche Hegels „an dem grossen Standpunkte Jacobi's gemessen, dass das Absolute als Geist zu erfassen ist, für denselben sehr ungenügend zeigen. Diese Grunde J acobi's sind noch keineswegs veraltet und durften im Kampf unserer Tage für das Recht der Individualitäten neuerdings die Schärfe der Waffe beweisen.
