Certainly the great American public will warmly sympathize with a publication which, aside from its unique value as a modest but bright little essay by a great sculptor on his own immortal work, will help to swell the fund so tardy in its accumulation, till the energy of a leading journal gave it fresh life.

In addition, however, to the pedestal fund proper, a further amount is needed, according to the statement of the committee, to provide for the cost of erecting the statue in place, for which Congress failed to make the expected appropriation.
