While we realize that introductory remarks are a conventional evil - which, fortunately, is serenely ignored by most readers - still, a few words of explanation appear necessary in connection with the publication of this volume. It has not been an individual enterprise but solely in response to the wide-spread demand of former members of the battery that the history Of the 43rd, which Hugh Kay and George Magee recorded for our amusement during the war till their task was cut short by death, should be completed and published in a more permanent form.

Almost four years have passed by since the night Of Christmas, 1916, when to the laughing audience assembled in an Aubigny estaminet Hugh Kay read his amusing chronicles. Written hastily, on short notice, simply to pass a social hour and with no idea of publication, his sketch is so faithful a portraiture of well-known bat tery figures that with ever-increasing interest we read the dialogues and personal glimpses in its pages and each line calls up Old memories, more poignant because not only Kay but so many of whom he wrote have passed out to that haven where the weary are at rest.
