F one wishes to explain house building to a child, it is best to show him how the foundations are laid and how the walls rise from them. So in trying to find an easy way to make a clear study of Modern Art, what it means and how it came about, I have tried to expose enough of the foundations to render easily intelligible the kind of house which has risen upon them. My intention has been to write a book not for the expert, but for the ordinary man who is interested in Art, or for the Art student who is still at the outset of his or her career.
