Excerpt from Notes on Finite Differences: For the Use of Students of the Institute of Actuaries
Any quantity such as x2 which depends on x in such a manner that for each value assigned to x it takes a determinate value is called a function of x.
As another illustration of a function, consider, out of persons born alive, the number, lx, who would be living at age w on the assumption that these persons were subject to some definite law of mortality. Here for each value of 23, the age attained, we have a definite number alive at that age. The quantity is therefore, according to our definition, a function of x.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. From calculating tables to physical and statistical research, this book discusses the elementary theorems of finite differences. For most tabulated functions, successive orders of differences rapidly diminish, making this book useful for calculating isolated points on a curve or approximating unknown values of a function. The author presents general expressions for functions based on equidistant values as well as methods for supplying missing equidistant values, with solved examples illustrating each method. The book then explores interpolation formulas including Lagrange's, Stirling's, and the author's own formula, comparing their results and discussing their applications. Though the author assumes readers have no knowledge of analytical geometry, they should be familiar with the methods of algebra. This book on finite differences is a valuable resource for students or anyone working in a field that uses functions. Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
