Excerpt from Infant Perdition in the Middle Ages
Chapter I. Various opinions concerning the Penalty of Original Sin after this Life.
Let us begin with those who die unbaptized in infancy, and bring with them no other guilt than that of original sin. There are five several opinions concerning the punishment [supplicio] of such infants, ranging gradually from the utmost mildness to the utmost severity.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book provides an extensive overview of the historical views on infant perdition held within the Roman Catholic church. The author delves into the complexities of the subject through a rich exploration of primary sources. The writings and beliefs of saints such as Augustine and Anselm, as well as the official decrees of ecumenical councils and papal pronouncements, are examined to paint a detailed picture of the Church's evolving stance on the eternal fate of unbaptized infants. The book argues that while the official position of the Church has softened over time, significant disagreement and debate continue to exist on this topic, with some theologians advocating harsher punishments than those embraced by the mainstream doctrine. Ultimately, this book offers a nuanced understanding of a complex theological issue, tracing the development of ideas surrounding infant perdition and highlighting the enduring influence of tradition and scripture on the Catholic Church's teachings.
