Excerpt from The Teaching of Jesus Concerning the Holy Spirit
God from his own Spirit, thus reasoning from the less to the greater? Or did he argue from the name spirit which in both Hebrew and Greek languages means also wind, that God was therefore like the wind unsearchable in origin and immaterial in essence These are interesting questions to the student of the origin of religion but they are not the immediate concern Of Biblical Theology. Did men at first generally ascribe all that was unusual and surprising in their ex perience to the Spirit Of God? Perhaps so, where they were without definite knowledge of Him. But the Old Testa ment describes how God chose out Of the world certain individuals and after ward a people to whom to make Him self known and we cannot therefore attribute to them such ignorant and su perstitious conceptions.
