Excerpt from Baltimore, Vol. 3: Its History and Its People; Biography
The ancestry of Mr. Clark is a most interesting one. By three lines of descent in Virginia, Pennsylvania and Maryland he traces the family to England. It is due to the remarkable military ability of General George Rogers Clark, of the Virginia branch of his family, that the United States received the territory which is now known as the States of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin, and the record attained by General Wil liam Clark of the Lewis and Clark expedition in his exploration of the Northwest stands out as one of the most important pieces of American history.
