Excerpt from Commentary on the Epistle to the Hebrews, Vol. 2 of 2
It is proper to advertise the reader, that in the translation of the Epistle to the Hebrews, which is prefixed to the present vol ume, I have purposely avoided the usual division into chapters and verses, which is exhibited in our common editions of the Scrip tures. I have done this, because the sense is sometimes disturbed by it, and the reader is unwarily led to associate things together, in a manner which the writer of the epistle never intended.

This book presents a detailed exploration into the Epistle to the Hebrews, a work of eminent scholarship that draws parallels between the Christian and old Jewish dispensations, demonstrating the superiority of the former. The author establishes the supremacy of Christ, the mediator of the new covenant, over angels and the Mosaic law. The book delves into the nature of Christ's priesthood, highlighting its superiority to that of the Levitical priesthood, and emphasizes the eternal nature of Christ's sacrifice, which made a single, perfect atonement for sin. The author provides a rich exposition of faith, illustrating its effects through the lives of Old Testament saints. Through these comparisons, the author's aim is to fortify the faith of Hebrew Christians and encourage them to persevere in their Christian profession amidst trials and temptations, ultimately underscoring the transformative power of Christ's teachings and the enduring significance of his message.
