Originally headquartered in leased accommodations, the academy flourished and outgrew its home on several occasions. By the 1870s, the academy began considering the construction of a new building to meet its needs. A suitable site was selected in 1875, and the academy moved into its new, elaborate headquarters in 1876. The building, located in what was then a less developed region of the city, signaled the growing prominence and sophistication of New York's medical community. Throughout its history, the academy contributed to the advancement of medicine by providing a physical space and intellectual environment where medical professionals could engage in collaborative research, publish major medical treatises, and establish medical ethical standards for the profession.
