A howling mob, composed of Queen Emma's partizans, had surrounded the court-house during the election, after which they battered down the back-doors, sacked the building, and assaulted the representatives with clubs. Messrs. C. C. Harris and S. B. Dole held the main door against them for consider able time. The mob, with one exception, refrained from violence to foreigners, from fear of intervention by the men of-war in port.
