Located in the southern fringe of the Chota Nagpur plateau, this district comprises the Kolhan Government estate in the southeast, the Dhalbhum revenue -paying estate in the east, and the Porahat revenue -free estate in the west. The district forms a part of the southern fringe of the Chota Nagpur plateau and the western portion is very hilly, especially in the north, where the highest points have an altitude of more than 4000 feet, and in Saranda par in the southwest, where the mountains culminate in a grand mass which rises to a height of 3750 feet. The district is occupied almost entirely by the Archaean group, a vast series of highly altered rocks. The author provides detailed information on administrative divisions, local self -government, police and justice, vital statistics, and other aspects.
