Excerpt from Sous les Armes: With Introduction, Notes And Vocabulary
This war, like a battle, is a continuous development and must be considered as a whole. It has, heretofore, been marked by a series of wide - spread and prolonged moves, each constituting, as it were, a distinct cam paign in itself, and yet none of which can be taken separately.
It will be possible to begin the history of the war only when it has come to an end. It would not at present be possible even to give anything like a fair and accu rate presentation of the events of the last four years.

This book compiles extraordinary accounts of the Great War from French soldiers and civilians alike, giving readers a firsthand look at the conflict that defined a century. Beginning with the French mobilization effort, firsthand accounts from French soldiers bring readers into the trenches, demonstrating the incredible courage and spirit of these men. The book also explores the lives of those at home, the civilians left behind struggling to cope with loved ones at war. Through these individual narratives, the author weaves a story of France's struggle to survive the war, capturing both the horrors of battle and the unwavering resolve of a nation. This assortment of perspectives illuminates not only the evolution of trench warfare and the challenges faced by those fighting it but goes beyond to provide a historical panorama of one of humanity's most turbulent periods.
