Excerpt from Meservey's Book-Keeping
Next in importance to reading, spelling, arithmetic, grammar, and geography, is book-keeping. Every scholar, before leaving the common or grammar school, should have sufficient knowledge of the art and science of book-keeping, to enable him to record any common business transaction. But almost every attempt to introduce book-keeping into the common school has proved a failure. One reason of this has been the fact, that instructors have not been competent to teach it successfully. This should be remedied by requiring them to pass a rigid examination upon the subject, before receiving a certificate. Another reason of this failure has been the want of a suitable text-book. The author has had many years experience in teaching book-keeping in common schools, in high schools, and in the commercial department of the institution with which he is now connected; and the following pages are the result of his experience and observation.
The book is easy enough to be comprehended by ordinary scholars, and hard enough to require real study. It is designed to be elementary, but at the same time sufficiently comprehensive for all practical purposes. It commences with examples which are very simple, and advances by easy grades through five forms of single, and six forms of double, entry. The method of questions and answers has been adopted, in the first half of this work, not so much with the design of requiring the student to commit the text verbatim, as to illustrate the authors idea of the proper method of teaching the science. The blackboard should be a constant companion of the text-book in teaching book-keeping.
