L'agitation est grande, le 25 septembre 1792, dans la salle du Manège des Tuileries où la Convention tient ses séances. Pour la première fois, depuis quatre jours qu'elle siège, se heurtent les deux partis qui, durant des mois, se vont déchirer. Les Girondins, qui se proclament les hommes de la Province, viennent d'attaquer violemment, par l'organe de Lasource, Paris et sa députation de massacreurs.

Alors un député de Paris monte à la tribune au milieu d'une vive émotion. La face large en forme de mufle, la bouche déformée, mais terrible tant elle frémit de passion, l'œil petit sous le sourcil touffu, mais d'où partent des flammes, le teint grèlé, la figure affreuse, mais que l'intelligence éclaire et que rougit la colère, le front énorme sous les cheveux épais, quelque chose de féroce, mais d'imposant: c'est Danton.

La main gauche embrassant la hanche puissante par un geste qui lui est familier, la droite se tend menaçante, cherche l'ennemi, le dénonce, l'arrache presque à son banc pour le clouer au pilori.
