The author, who is regarded as a Chief of Bureau of Steam Engineering, believed that a boiler of American design should be adopted by the US Navy, with the ideal fuel being one that could be easily trained and operated by enlisted personnel. The experiments detailed here represent the culmination of these beliefs. The book also includes an official report of the steamship Mariposa burning liquid fuel. The problem of water-tube boilers, the Hohenstein boiler trials, the battle of the British boilers, and the role of liquid fuel in naval operations are all discussed in detail. The author concludes by stating the Hohenstein boiler could be regarded as the equal of any used in foreign battleships, following the extensive trials conducted in the effort to replace coal with liquid fuel for the US Navy.
