Non appena giunsi sul palcoscenico, la buona signora mi vide, mi corse incontro, mi stese le due mani ossute e poco pulite:
- Oh! benedetto! Come stai?
Ella dava del tu a tutti, per antica abitudine contratta in gioventù.
- Benone. E voi? E Bianca?
- Zitto, e fatti in qua, che non ti veda in quinta. A la sua scena-madre. Se scorge un amico come te, al quale vuol bene, e che non vede da mesi, si distrae, si commuove, e piglia una papera. Talento ce n'è, sai, da vendere. Ma non son che tre mesi che copre il ruolo, e, mi capirai, le manca ancora un po'di pratica.
Mi prese per la mano e trascinandomi, in punta di piedi, per non far rumore, mi condusse al suo camerino, sul lato opposto della scena.
