Excerpt from A History of Painting
Eighteen months thereafter, Chardin was awarded the great prize of the Academy - apartments at the Louvre. Here he was thoroughly happy, with Tocqué, Lemoyne the sculptor, Restout, Boucher, La Tour, Lepicié, and Cochin for his com rades. Leading his monotonous life of heavy labour in his art, he was harassed only by the troubles which his brilliant young son Pierre now began to bring into his life. Like the sons of so many great men, he was a conceited, arrogant, self-willed lad, full of dreams that never became a reality - troubling others, himself perhaps most of all. Winning in 1754 the Prix de Rome, and having completed his three years in the recently established Eco/e o'er e'le'ver prote'ge'x, the young fellow set out for Rome in October 1757.
