Excerpt from The American Builder's Companion: Or a System of Architecture, Particularly Adapted to the Present Style of Building; Illustrated With Seventy Copperplate Engravings
Five years having elapsed since the first publication of the American Builder during which time I have been constantly employed in drawing and executing plans for buildings. The experience Of that time enables me to confirm some, and reject other former methods.
Sixteen plates, which were in the first edition, I have laid aside, and have added twenty-nine new ones which almost make this a new work.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the fascinating world of architecture, tracing its roots back to the very beginnings of human civilization. The author takes readers on a journey through the evolution of building styles, from the primitive huts of our earliest ancestors to the majestic temples of antiquity. The book explores the fundamental elements of architectural design, the "orders" that have served as the foundation for countless structures throughout history. These orders, such as the Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian, are presented as distinct modes of building, each with its own unique character and proportions. The author also delves into the origins of these orders, drawing upon historical accounts and examining the influence of materials and cultural contexts. With a focus on the essential parts of architecture, the book analyzes the forms and functions of columns, bases, capitals, architraves, and cornices, explaining how they developed and evolved over time. The author explores the use of mouldings in creating visually appealing and functionally sound structures, discussing the various types of mouldings and their appropriate applications. The book provides readers with a deeper understanding of the historical and artistic foundations of architecture, revealing how the seemingly simple forms of early building techniques gave birth to the intricate and elegant structures that continue to inspire us today.
