In general there are two chief ends in View when a man begins to prune a fruit tree; he wishes to shape it or to make it produce in accordance with some definite idea. A knowledge of the science and experience in the art of pruning are almost essential to a satisfactory attainment of the desired objects. Conditions and personal opinions are at such variance that this bulletin will concern itself chiefly with principles that underlie pruning practises.
