Excerpt from Mr. Sponge's Sporting Tour
IN introducing Mr. Sponge's Sporting Tour to the acquaint ance of my friends of the reading, as well as the riding world of America, I have a few preliminary words to say; since, although in some respects it may be considered as a genuine sporting book, and is undoubtedly the work of a thorough and genuine sportsman, horse man, and foxhunter, one to the manner born, and familiar with the saddle and the spur as much, at least, as with the inkhorn and the quill, it yet differs-materially and widely from any volume which I have ushered, at any time, to the notice of the public, whether in the quality of editor or author.

Excerpt from Mr. Sponge's Sporting Tour
The author gladly avails himself of the convenience of a Preface for stating, that it will be seen at the close of the work why he makes such a characterless character as Mr. Sponge the hero of his tale.
He will be glad if it serves to put the rising generation on their guard against specious, promiscuous acquaintance, and trains them on to the noble sport of hunting, to the exclusion of its mercenary, illegitimate off-shoots.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book follows Mr. Sponge, an ambitious but impecunious fox-hunting enthusiast, as he embarks on a quest to elevate his social status through marriage, while still indulging in his beloved sport. The author provides a satirical and humorous commentary on Victorian society and customs through the escapades of Mr. Sponge. The book offers a unique perspective on the social dynamics of the era, where money and connections often trumped genuine character. Exploring themes of fortune hunting, social climbing, and the complexities of class structure, the author presents a cast of colorful characters who interact in witty and often absurd ways, highlighting the absurdities and hypocrisies of the upper classes. Ultimately, this book is an amusing and thought-provoking read that delves into the complexities of social ambition and the pursuit of wealth and status.
