These Memoirs were originally entitled by the writer Recollections of my Life, but when he gave his last directions concerning them he directed that they should be called Memoirs. He was asked whether they were dedicated to an old and valued friend of his early life, and replied, "They are not dedicated to any one; you will see for yourself, when you come to read them, that they are not fit to be dedicated to any one." A provisional dedication, therefore, which was found in the Ms., has been withdrawn by the same authority as that whereby the title has been changed. One or two paragraphs at the beginning, which he considered of "too egotistical a character," have also been cancelled by his express directions and indications.
