Assuming actual purchasers of previous volumes from the same pen to be possible purchasers of the present one, and even of others yet to come, it may be due to them to say a word (which otherwise the writer, with a wholesome horror of Prefaces, would prefer to leave unsaid) on what may look like a rather too rapid rate of production.

The rate of production, however, has been anything but rapid, whatever that of publication may be. Were the volumes spread over the face of time which covers their manuscript growth, they would seem as few as far between.
