Excerpt from Hard Cash, Vol. 1 of 3: A Matter-of-Fact Romance
"Hard Cash," like "The Cloister and the Hearth," is a matter-of-fact Romance; that is, a fiction built on troths: and these truths have been gathered by long, severe, systematic, labor, from a multitude of volumes, pamphlets, journals, reports, blue-books, manuscript narratives, letters, and living people, whom I have sought out, examined and cross-examined, to get at the truth on each main topic I have striven to handle.
The madhouse scenes have been picked out by certain disinterested gentlemen who keep private asylums, and periodicals to puff them; and have been met with bold denials of public facts and with timid personalities, and a little easy cant about Sensation* Novelists. But in reality those passages have been written on the same system as the nautical, legal, and other scenes.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This gripping Victorian-era novel explores the intersection of science, class, and morality. The author delves into the brutal realities of mental healthcare in 19th-century England through the lens of two familiesâ"one wealthy, the other working-class. The story follows Edward Dodd, a kind-hearted but academically challenged young man whose family's ambitions for him clash with his own. As Edward navigates the rigid social hierarchy and the flawed medical practices of the time, he encounters Alfred Hardie, a brilliant and ruthless medical student. Hardie's experiments with controversial treatments for mental illness raise ethical questions and expose the class-based prejudices that shape society's perceptions of mental health. The author's vivid storytelling and exploration of the human condition make this a compelling read for anyone interested in the complexities of اÙØ Ø , class, and social justice.
