Christ's halo, the rainbow colours into which the pure white light may be decomposed as by spectrum analysis. It is well to behold not only the diffused light of the central halo, but also the tongue of flame resting upon each several head.

Excerpt from The Twelve: Apostolic Types of Christian Men

"Te glorious company of the Apostles" is immortal as a company but its constituent individuals are in danger of fading into obscurity. Peter, John and Thomas stand out with some distinctness in the imagination, but how much of a picture is suggested by the names Philip, James or Bartholomew? By collecting the references to each in the gospel story and reading between the lines without undue imagination, at least nine of the Twelve may be observed walking and talking in propria persona "members in particular."

Such visualization is of value, for it diversifies the Christian appeal. As Professor William James has brilliantly elucidated, there are "Varieties of Religious Experience." The apostles represent different reactions upon the central realities of the Gospel.
