Many years ago, the noted California historian, Hubert Howe Bancroft, told the story of the Pacific Northwest in several fat volumes. Although he wrote nearly two million words, he did not carry the narra tive beyond the late eighties. I have tried to tell the same Story - in its entirety - in fewer than words! Of necessity, great names have been omitted and significant events have been passed over. Still I be lieve that the main current of this dramatic narrative will be found on the pages which follow.

I am indebted to various friends who have Offered valuable suggestions and to many authors, living and dead, whose works I have consulted. Most of all, I am grateful to Miss Nellie B. Pipes of the Oregon His torical Society, and to Mr. Walter W. R. May of the Portland General Electric Company, who - cheerfully and without a whimper - undertook the thankless task of checking the manuscript.
