The Book of the Farm, that wonderful treatise published about 1842 by Henry Stephens, must have caused many people, whether or not engaged in farming, to reflect that the business of agriculture is rightly a very special work, scarcely possible in advance of a solidarity in the state, and that if anything, good land is a worse asset than poor land in that case.
