Excerpt from The Evolution of Modern Money
A paper which was sent in, at the late Lord Farrer's suggestion, to the Indian Currency Com mittee of 1898, and printed in the Blue Book of 1899 (appendix I. Class C. N O. Is inserted as Appendix A., as illustrating the general prin ciples of the work in their practical application. Appendix B. Contains some variations which it seems necessary to introduce into Mommsen's theory of the reduction of the as, in the light of recent numismatic evidence.

Excerpt from The Evolution of Modern Money
In the following pages an attempt has been made to treat the phenomena of money, from first to last, from the historical standpoint. As regards the money of antiquity I have been indebted for many valuable suggestions to Mr. George Macdonald, M.A., the editor of the recently issued Catalogtie of Greek Coins in the Hunterian Collection, who also has been good enough to read the proofs for me.
In Chapters I. and II. of the first part I have drawn considerably on two articles contributed to the Journal of Political Economy (U.S.A.), as well as on a paper published in the Transactions of the Philosophical Society of Glasgow for 1898 ; and in Chapters V. and VI. of the second part on two articles contributed to the Economic Review.
