Frond much divided, tree-like; branchlets awl-shaped, clothed with tufts of minute bristle-like twiggy processes, in a cluster of which every branchlet terminates. Frond rising from a short stem expanding into a fan-shaped membrane, sometimes deeply cleft. A very rare deep water weed. Phyllophora, leaf-weed. Frond membranaceous, stalked, expanding in fan-shaped divisions which are cut into broad fingerlike lobes; spores in sessile or stalked conceptacles; tetraspores in external scattered warts. P. Srodicei, Brodie's. Stem cylindrical, branching into wedgeshaped lobes; root a small disc. A handsome weed of a deep red, sparingly distributed in deep water, on rocky northern coasts.
