Frond much divided, tree-like; branchlets awl-shaped, clothed with tufts of minute bristle-like twiggy processes, in a cluster of which every branchlet terminates. An abundant and well-known weed, much in request for seaweed pictures. Plate B, Fig. 9. Cordylecladia. Frond cartilaginous, thread-like; spores on branched threads in a globular mass, in stalkless conceptacles; tetraspores immersed in pod-like branchlets. C. erecta, erect. Frond three inches, thread-like, branching; spores in thick spherical conceptacles, tetraspores in egg-shaped pods at the tips of the branches. A very distinct and pretty weed, in perfection in winter. Plate B, Fig. 15. Frond rising from a short stem expanding into a fan-shaped membrane, sometimes deeply cleft. A very rare deep water weed. Phyllophora, leaf-weed. Frond membranaceous, stalked, expanding in fan-shaped divisions which are cut into broad fingerlike lobes; spores in sessile or stalked conceptacles; tetraspores in external scattered warts. P. Srodicei, Brodie's. Stem cylindrical, branching into wedgeshaped lobes; root a small disc. A handsome weed of a deep red, sparingly distributed in deep water, on rocky northern coasts. Marsden, Whitby, Bambro, Holy Island. P. rubens, red. Frond expanding into wedge-shaped segments, which again divide into smaller segments, all of them furnished with an obscure midrib.
