Not illustrated. 1903 Excerpt: ... Dredging Operations One of the most important dredging operations in California is that in the bed of the Calaveras River near Jenny Lind. A hole 100 feet square and 20 feet deep has been excavated in the bed of the stream, and a levee thrown up around it. The dredging boat is being built at the bottom. As soon as the dredger is completed the water will be let in to float it. The machine will then work its way along the bank, washing out the gold. The gravel beds along the river are rich ia gold. A stampede has started for Goose Creek,-40 miles northeast of Baker City, Ore., occasioned by a recent rich strike on the Red Bell mine. Broker Ralph Guthrie on the Salt Lake Exchange has made a wager that silver would be selling for 64' cents pr ounce by Christmas. Th-i Amparo Mining Company has shipped ten car loads of ore, which are expected to show returns between $50,000 and $60,000. The Sunbeam Mining Co. has 50 men at work on Friday gulch, near Hill City, S. D., in development work on the mine and the construction of a20-stamp mill. Charles Elmore, inventor and patentee of the Elmore oil process of concentrating, will arrive in Rossland, B. C, in a few days to inspect the Elmore plant at the Le Roi No. 2 mine. The New York Mining & Exploration Co. has purchased the Belen mine at Tapalpa, state of Jalisco, Mexico, and is going to spend considerable money in the developing of the property. The price was about $50,000. Ray-Tonopah Mining stock will be advanced from 15 cents to 25 cents on October 24. The well-known firm of Sanford Makeever & Co., Philadelphia, New York, Chicago and Boston, are fiscal agents for the Company.
