THIS is autobiographic. Probably Paul wrote in the spring of the year 58. And he records a great evangelical determination which he had registered before high heaven. The determinations of the Bible deserve careful study. None, however, is more solemn and august and inspiring than this. Can we rise to the height of this great argument? Very startling is this avowal. In view of his ministry at Corinth, Paul had determined doubtless very much, but this supremely, "not to know anything, save Jesus Christ, and Him crucified." He will not know even Jesus Christ save in one aspect. That is the idea. One of our best exegetes thus renders the words : " And even Him as having been crucified." It is the crucified Christ alone he will know. Observe the far-reaching word "know." Not merely does he refuse to speak on any other theme, but he will "know " none other. The crucified Saviour shall fill the whole horizon of his mind and heart. He will, so to say, severely limit his Christology to this phase: "Even Him as having been crucified." It was without controversy a portentous determination. Truly the crucified Christ must be the transcendent spiritual truth and power when Paul so resolved concerning Him. Was this an exceptional determination? Some have singled out the words "among you" as signifying something out of the usual run of Paul's ministry. They have represented him as saying, " I determined to do among you for special reasons what I am not accustomed to do in my general ministry." But I cannot accept such an interpretation.
