"Certainly," replied Mr Ogle, "I intend to use my birthright as a freeman to disseminate, as opportunity offers, the knowledge of the Word of God, which you, Monsieur, since you know something of England, know it is the duty of every man who possesses it to make known." The application was ultimately refused, and Mr Ogle came to the determination to venture alone among the Arab tribes. The details of his visit are given in the letters that follow, written in June and July of 1859. In Oran the expedition was regarded as one attended with great risk, on many accounts, but chiefly from the reputed character of the Arabs; but by the good hand of God upon him our missionary went and returned, and no evil befell him. He pitched his tent amid the tents of the Arabs; he partook of their salt; he received from them acts of kindness, and he rendered them acts of kindness in return; he spoke to them of the matters of their eternal salvation, and when he departed he left behind him an impression which will be the best passport of any European missionary who may follow him into these regions.
