As he drew nearer the city he bought the latest editions of all the New York papers. It seemed to him as he looked them over that they contained little else except accounts of Jesus and his sayings and doings. The whole city was moved by his presence. Whenever he appeared and was recognised in public, the people streamed towards him. The sudden cry of "Jesus is here!" was like a magic spell to attract the multitude. But he was beginning to arouse bitter criticism and hostility. The history of his denunciation of Roswald Drake and his public arraignment of the influential men of the press in their cowardly support of the liquor interests had aroused the hatred of those who in every age have shielded their wickedness and selfishness behind age long custom and special privilege of social standing and wealth. One editorial comment in particular struck Carter as significant of public feeling. He read it with conflicting feelings. "There is a growing sentiment that Jesus is exciting the popular mind dangerously by his denunciations of men of wealth. New York will not stand for inflaming utterances against property and the legal acquisition of riches. This is dangerous ground which he will do well to avoid treading over. Let him confine himself to acts of healing and the preaching of moral living. The attacks he is making on the press for its so-called friendliness to the liquor interests are absurd.
