Excerpt: ... July, 1802.. RIGHT TO PLUNDERED PROPERTY. 243 It is better for the Company, therefore, that the bridge should be at Seringapatam, and immediately under the guns of the fort. General Stuart having turned his attention lately to the state of the strength of Seringapatam, which the construction of a bridge over the Cauvery may be supposed to affect, I write to him upon the subject this day. It is desirable, however, that the matter should be decided soon, as Purneah will have time in that case to collect the materials before the river falls, and the bridge will be completed before it fills again in the next season. I shall be glad, therefore, if you will let me have your sentiments upon this subject as soon as convenient. If General Stuart should see no objection to it in a military point of view, and if you should see no objection to the Rajah's building the bridge on the score of expense, I shall recommend to government that he may be allowed to do so, and Purneah may commence immediately to collect his materials. I have to request that you will be so kind as to send for Madar Saheb, and, in presence of the aumildar of Bangalore, return him the money which was taken from him by your orders.
