The foreign trade of Latin America totals almost three billions annually. United States does about 40 per cent, of this. Latin America sells what we need--coffee, rubber, minerals and metals, hard woods, extracts, fruits, grains, animal products, etc. Latin America needs what we sell and will have to sell in increasing quantities--manufactured goods. We compete successfully with Europe in some lines of machinery, leather goods and manufacturers of wood. We are weak in textiles, porcelain, china, earthenware, glassware, toilet preparations and accessories. How can we grow in Latin American trade? Credit facilities, weak in the past, will be greatly strengthened by the establishment of branch banks in Latin America, under the Federal Reserve Act. Shipping disadvantages, overestimated in the past, should be entirely overcome by increased United States tonnage constructed now for war purposes. Exporters must study manufacturing processes more thoroughly, and the markets and marketing conditions first hand, in order to compete with the English, Germans and French.
