Danielsohn, Hess and Fiirbringer to have great advantages over corrosive sublimate for disinfecting the hands.3 An1l1ne, amidobenzene, or phenylamine, C0H3(NH2), has been tried in France as a disinfectant, but has great disadvantages. It is poisonous, and hence a germicide. It slowly volatilizes at ordinary temperatures, giving a vapour of oppressive tobacco-like odour, which kills bacteria, but does not easily affect their spores. Pettenkofer and Lehmann assert4 that 01 per cent. of aniline vapour in air is dangerous to man and animals. From this fact, and the slow rate at which it diffuses, its use for fumigation is negatived. The salts are antiseptic, and, being acid, absorb ammonia and compound ammonias, but not sulphuretted hydrogen. Angus Smith5 places aniline in his sixth class--i.e., as moderately antiseptic. Dr. Fischer has shown that tubercular sputum mixed with ten times its volume of aniline water, is completely disinfected in twenty-four hours.
