JOHN PITT, Earl of CHATHAM, Viscount Pitt, of Burton Pynsent, co. Somerset, and Baron Chatham, of Chatham, in right of his mother (who d. 3 April 1803), K.G., an Elder Brother of the Trinity House, Governor of the Charter House, High Steward of Colchester, a General in the Army, Colonel 4th Regiment of Foot, and Governor of Gibraltar; borti 10 Sept. 1757; succeeded his father, William, the late earl, 11 May 1778; married, 9 July 1783, Mary-Elizabeth Townshend, 2d da. of Thomas, 1st viscount Sidney; and by her (who d. 21 May 1821) had no issue. John Pitt, clerk of the exchequer in the reign of queen Eli. zabeth, had 3 sons; 1. sir William, who was seated at Stapleton, co. Dorset, and was ancestor of the present baron Rivers; 2. John, who settled in Ireland, and left issue; and 3. Thomas, of Blandford Forum, whose 2d son, John, rector of Blandford St. Mary's, was father of Thomas Pitt, governor of Fort St. George, Madras, where he purchased for 48,000 pagodas, or £20,400 sterling, that celebrated fine diamond, weighing one hundred and twenty-seven carats, which he sold to the king of France for £135,000 sterling, and which is about the size of a pigeon's egg. He was M.P. for Old Sarum, and 6 July 1716, he was appointed governor of Jamaica, m. Jane, da. of James, 2d ton of Adam Innes, of Reid Hall, co. Murray, a descendant of the earl of Murray, natural son of James V. of Scotland, and had issue, Robert, of Boconnock, of whom hereafter; and Thomas, created baron of Londonderry, 1719, and viscount of Galen-Ridgeway, and ear) Londonderry, 1726 (having in. the h. of Ridgeway, earl of Londonderry), which titles became extinct 1764.
