New North Church: Life and Death in Early Boston, 265 pages, 60 illustrations, indexed. Started by working tradesmen, New North (1713-1863) grew to become Boston's largest and only church to hold services throughout the Revolutionary War. It began as Puritan, became Congregational and ended Unitarian. Tells life of the common people in those times, Black membership, and notorious murder of Dr. George Parkman by Professor John Webster in 1850 and its sensational trial. Famous and interesting personages who were connected to the church. It was the church of Rose Kennedy, matriarch of the famous family. Now St. Stephen's Roman Catholic Church, the building on Hanover St. still welcomes visitors and worshipers and is much the same as it was then. Detailed records from 1813-1870 of births, marriages, membership and deaths with full index. Reading this, you will be fully immersed into those times.
