The distinguished writers found herein include well~known historians, anthropologists, diplomats, and political leaders, representing the United States, Russia, Great Britain, Canada and France ~all among countries allied against Nazi Germany and its Axis powers during the war. Their inspirational memories and observations remind us of a time when cooperation and good will among peace~seeking nations arose victorious over evil. The Introduction by Jeffrey Hahn briefly describes Russian~American cooperation and competition cycles as they are related to the Cold War and detente between the former Soviet Union and the United States. The, articles of Alexander Dolitsky, Blake Smith and Ivan Negenblya, using both primary and secondary accounts, support Hahn's concept that common interests among the Allies determined their foreign policies and military missions. The article "Women Aviators During World War II and on the Alaska~Siberia Airway;' by Miriam Lancaster, justly recognizes the contributions of both the American Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) and the Soviet women pilots to the Allied victory. The work of these pilots also set the foundation for, women's equal rights in the United States and Russia in the decades following the war. The presenters' remarks, offered at the Dedication of the WWU Alaska~Siberia Lend~Lease Plaza in Fairbanks in August of 2005, and at the Dedication of the Lend~Lease Memorial in Fairbanks in August 2006, and published here in their entirety, are at once inspiring, factual, emotional, and visionary. In one, voice, the presenters acknowledge the significance of the Allies' cooperation against a common enemy during WWII. This historic cooperation serves as a lesson for today's new challenges, and also points out the necessity for peace~seeking nations to cooperate against global terrorism and other regional conflicts that are threatening the world. today.
