First published in 1983. The book's cover is in full-colour gloss and laminated. Maybe some minor shelf wear; inside is a nice clean copy. ## ## PREFACE: This third edition of "RNLI PENLEE", so much enlarged as a new book, has several themes. It describes the history of the Station and how it has moved several times in the area at the head of mount Bay. It outlines the changes in demands on the Lifeboat Service, which have taken place over the years, as exemplified by Penlee. The direction forward by great technical advances in Lifeboats and communications. Overall these advances have not made the task of the Lifeboatmen any less exacting. With its history stretching back to 1803, the Penlee & Penzance Branch history is in many ways a microcosm of the history of the R.N.L.I. ## ## At the same time, there would be no Lifeboats without the fund's volunteer workers raise. Over the years, their methods of fundraising have also changed.## ## Only two things do not change in the Lifeboat service, the courage demanded of the Lifeboat crews and the dedication required of those who support them. In this respect, particularly, the book looks back at the loss of the Penlee Lifeboat Solomon Browne on the night of December 19th, 1981 and its traumatic effect on the Branch. But it also looks forward to the operation of the new Penlee Arun class Lifeboat. ## ## It would not be possible to mention all the people within and without the Lifeboat service who have helped the authors in many ways. They have provided wisdom and advice, information and Illustrations, encouragement and inspiration. Not the least valuable factor has been conversations with Lifeboatmen and Branch people, past and present, going back over many years. They all contributed to the writing of this book, and the authors are deeply grateful to them for their friendship.
