This anthology of Irish songs, ballads and poetry reaches across three centuries and is drawn from the lanes and highways of 32 counties. to evoke a literary landscape, recollected through the author's friendship and acquaintance with Douglas Hyde, Francis MacManus, Brinsley MacNamara, Donagh MacDonagh, Paddy Tunney, Maurice Craig, Louis MacNeice, Thomas MacGreevey, Bertie Rodgers, W.B. Higgins, Louis MacNeice, Patrick Kavanagh, Francis Ledwidge and Oliver St John Gogarty; and songs of love, rebellion and in praise of nature including "The Yellow Bittern", "The Bold Fenian Men", "Ringleted Youth of my Love", "Galway Races" and "My Love is Like the Sun".
