Western Pennsylvania is a product of its geography -- the rivers, the Allegheny mountains, and the resources within. The story of its people is recalled here, from the Whiskey Rebellion, to the 'Gateway to the West', to Carnegie's steel mills, to the recent loss of manufacturing jobs. Personal and business histories combine to tell why Pittsburgh has been the focus of so many important industries and events. Many of the artefacts illustrated are drawn from an accompanying exhibit at the Pittsburgh Regional History Center.
