"Among the art collections of the New York State Historical Association (NYSHA), housed in the Fenimore Art Museum, are many visual images of African Americans purposefully collected. Stephen C. Clark (1882-1960), trustee and benefactor of NYSHA, and later Clark in collaboration with Dr. Louis C. Jones (1908-1990), the Association's Director from 1947-1972, purchased these images and artifacts because they found them aesthetically important, but also particularly American."
