Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Good. 1st Edition. Text in English. 184 pp. Worn spine and cover edges. Moderate scuffing and edgewear to dust jacket; stain on rear of dust jacket. Former owners name on the front free endpaper. In 1954, Hugh Hefner set out to create a publication that would be unique. He appointed Chicago artist Art Paul art director of the unnamed magazine and challenged him to create a new visual standard for magazine illustration. Paul responded by ignoring not only traditional representational illustration but also all distinctions between "high" art and "low" art. Over the years, Playboy has maintained a policy of acquiring commissioned works, and the magazine's permanent collection currently exceeds 4,000 pieces. An acclaimed exhibition of selected works from that collection has been touring the United States, Europe, and Asia for more than a dozen years, and the exhibition formed the nucleus of the even larger selection (more than 170 works) presented in this volume. The diversity of artists represented is astonishing, and equally astonishing is their "fit" together, allowing the viewer to see the reason in Art Paul's refusal to distinguish between fine art and illustration. Not often does one have the pleasure of seeing works by Salvador Dali, LeRoy Neiman, Tomi Ungerer, and Andy Warhol, brought sensibly together. Beyond the "theoretical" statement implicit in the collection, the artworks themselves range widely among the possibilities of aesthetic expression: wit and pain, beauty and horror, all find their places among these images. One can also see here how the styles and concerns of individual artists evolved over three decades, while Ray Bradbury's text offers lively commentaries - sometimes the story behind a particular work, sometimes a note on an especially striking juxtaposition. Finally, notice should be taken of an interesting phenomenon: many of the fine artists found they could create illustrations without compromising their way of working, while the illustrators, freed from the traditional commercial demand for literal depiction could create more personal and lasting works. As Paul states, "Illustration in the grand manner can be an extremely flexible art, and there are opportunities in this industry for artists to flourish without personal aesthetic compromise?" The truth of this statement is evident in the bold, imaginative, and often witty works presented in this volume. Nº de ref. del artículo: 5666
