De Nueva Zelanda a Estados Unidos de America
Descripción Hardcover. Condición: VG+. Estado de la sobrecubierta: NF. Photos Ilustrador. 1st. Henry Winkelmann came to NZ in 1878, following a brother who had emingrated earlier. Their German parents had settled in Bradford, England, to participate in the wool and cloth trade and Henry was born in England. The children of the family were all well educated. However, on arrival in NZ Henry was unable to find work and soon moved north from Dunedin, visiting several parts of the country and then settling in Auckland. His first employment was extraordinary --- to take possession of a Pacific Island said to be rich in guano. He and a colleague sailed on a small schooner for the island which was to be secured for an Auckland company. For eight months they remained on Jarvis Island (with supplies for five months) until rescued by a boat sent from Auckland. Back in civilisation Henry joined the bank of New Zealand which sent him back to the Pacific, to Fiji where he served till 1887, remaining on the bank staff at Auckland and Christchurch and later buying land on Great Barrier Island. In 1889 he was transferred to the bank's Sydney branch, returning to Auckland 1891. It was about this time he developed an intererst in photography and soon recognised its commercial protential. From that time his reputation for phoprography grew quickly, his particular focus being yachts and maritime subjects. However, while having established business interests in Auckland he continued to travel throughout the country, always recording sights and scenes through the camera lens. The result was that Henry Winkelmann built up an impressive collection of photographs of many subjects. in many settings, which today provide a remarkable retrospective view of life in NZ from the 1880s to the 1920s. He retired from active photopgraphy about 1928 and died in Auckland in 1931. His legacy is secure in those magnificent images, many of which remain popular to this day. Vivian Edwards' book on Henry Winkelmann is in two parts --- a biographical/travel section to page 78 which is illustrated with many of Henry's photos and a portfolio of Winkelmann photograhps running to page 134 (many of these are full page), followed by a short section dealing with cameras and techniques he used, then a sources and references list plus index.
