Bewildered and alone, he is befriended by Hussein, one of the student leaders, who introduces him to politics. ***Aziz passes his medical exams with outstanding honours. But once on the wards he is faced with a growing sense of helplessness. A man with TB must go back to work in a stifling laundry or his children will starve. A Palestinian student mutilated by a bomb planted in a crowded cinema dies horribly in front of his eyes. Abandoning his medical career, Aziz becomes involved with the political underground. ***Most of the story is set in jail, where Aziz reflects on his early life, the historical context of his struggle for political commitment, and previous periods of imprisonment. He is brutally tortured, and betrayed by his friend and mentor, Hussein, but he and his fellow political prisoners impress the ordinary prisoners and even some of the warders with their courage and dedication, and are helped by them.
