Descripción Hardcover. Condición: NF. Estado de la sobrecubierta: VG+. Photos, Sketches, Documents Ilustrador. 1st. Bemjamin Short emigrated to Australia from England with his wife and young family in 1860. Like thousands of others he was seeking a new life and challenges in a new country. Coming from a strong Christian background he was keenly involved in social work in London and resumed this activity in Sydney, where he found work selling insurace for the Australian Mutual Provident Society (AMP). He soon realised there was as much need for this charitable and missionary efforts in Sydney as in London. He was a leader in establishing the Sydney City Mission and other good causes. His success in the Australian insurace industry led to him to being appointed to establish the AMP in New Zealand in 1871. He, and later the family, lived in Dunedin and Nelson and after 10 years they returned ro Sydney, where both insurance and evangalism again occupied him. Benjamin Short was undoubtedly an outstanding achiever, in business and through his missionary zeal and both themes run strongly through the book. His grand-daughter, Wilsie Short, compiled this biography, basing it largely on his papers, which she inherited. AMP was associater with the publication of the book, which adds much to the Australia, NZ social history, and to the early days of the insurance industry. First edition of 1994, 138 pages, few photos, line drawings throughout by Cathy Chegwidden, including douple page spreads for each of the seven parts, few document reproductions, map, art e/papers. Black hard covers with gilt spine titles NF, ditto text block, no inscriptions. Colour art wrap-round DJ VG+ with few chips, short tear at spine extremities. Nº de ref. del artículo: 004208
Descripción Large 8vo hardcover 138pp b/w illus. very good+ / very good+ d/w. Benjamin Short came to Australia in 1860 as an energetic youth determined to take part in the development of a new nation. Soon after arriving in Sydney he began to sell insurance for Australian Mutual Provident Society (AMP). It was not long before it became apparent that through hard work and committment he was proving to be a very successful canvasser. Benjamin Short was a man who firmly believed that prayer, philanthropy and life insurance were essential for a healthy society. He had a strong desire to strengthen families. He saw insurance as a way for ordinary people to help themselves and for widows and their children not be reduced to abject poverty and destitution. His compassion and philanthropy were not only the foundations for selling life insurance, but also led him to set up the Sydney City Mission after being appalled by the scenes of destitution in Sydney's Rocks area. He went on to become an active evangelist in Australia and New Zealand, a Bible Study leader, an honorary parson of the congregation, and a keen supporter of the YMCA. Nº de ref. del artículo: 33406
